Most applicants whose dental qualification is from outside the EEA will be required to sit the ORE. Exempt dental graduates are entitled to an individual assessment, although this is not a guaranteed route to registration.
Registering for the OR exam
If you are a dentist and have not previously been registered with the GDC, the GDC will ask whether you qualified from either of the following:
- The UK - the ORE would not be required.
- Inside the EEA - you may be considered an "exempt person” if you are an EEA national.
- Outside the EEA (Europe) - you will either need to have a recognised qualification or have passed the ORE.
The main criteria for being accepted to take the ORE Exam includes:
- Familiarity with the National Health Service (NHS) or British culture - other than the ways in which it will affect your treatment of patients.
- Clinical knowledge - as set out by the ORE syllabus and the GDG "Preparing for Practice document".
- Clinical experience - at least 1600 hours of clinical experience where you have personally treated patients in the dental chair.
- English language requirement - this could be IELTS or a dental degree that was taught in English.
More information can be found on the GDC website.
